Usman Nawaz – Engagement Consultant

Usman joined the NHS Transformation Unit (TU) in September 2017. As an Engagement Consultant, he is  responsible for providing strategic advice and guidance for patient, public and stakeholder engagement. Usman has worked in the NHS for nearly four years and prior to starting his new role at TU, he worked for the NHS Eastern Cheshire Clinical Commissioning Group.

The first thing I do when I get to work is…

I find a hot desk to sit at and set up my laptop. This is the first job I’ve been in where I’ve not had a permanent desk, and though I was unsure of how it would work out when I first started, I’ve really come to enjoy this arrangement. Sitting with a different set of colleagues each day helps start conversations that you might not otherwise have.

Once I’m set up, I’ll check through my emails and pull together my to-do list for the day.

When I’m not in the office, I’m normally found…

Meeting colleagues from other NHS organisations to discuss patient engagement.  My role is all about engaging and involving people, and so making and sustaining links and relationships is a big part of it.

After a busy day, I relax by…

Spending time with my family, catching up with my favourite TV shows or going out for dinner with my wife – we’ve recently got married.

Why are you passionate about the NHS?

I’m passionate about the NHS because of the difference it makes to people’s lives, but also because it’s so diverse and wide-ranging. The NHS is a national treasure and something that everyone in this country is proud of.

The best thing about working at the TU is…

I think it’s the diversity of the staff in terms of their backgrounds and experience. The TU brings together so many people from different backgrounds and there’s so much to learn from them. There’s also a really positive, supportive and empowering organisational culture at the TU and I really enjoy being part of it.

If I weren’t  doing this job, I would be…

Trying to make world peace as a diplomat in the United Nations. I’ve always wanted to work for the UN…maybe something will come up in the future!
